I need to drop body fat and tone muscle. Will cutting carbs affect my toning results?
Question by Nice Guy: I need to drop body fat and tone muscle. Will cutting carbs affect my toning results?
I do a cycle of winter weight gain and spring weight loss and toning. It has been harder for me in the past two years to get back to six-pack. I’m thinking of reducing carbs drastically after the holidays. Is that going to make me feel sluggish at the gym?

It does take the body a while to not only convert to using fat as it’s primary fuel source but even longer for the body to compete athletically with fat as it’s primary fuel source but it does convert and does have advantages. Low carb marathon runners do not “hit the wall” since there is no mid race fuel change.
I know your question is going to be for how long. I use to be athletic but I didn’t start low carb til I became disabled so have no clue personally. I feel confident in saying that it does convert totally eventually – our bodies were never meant to be fueled by carbs exclusively. Cavemen hunters were fueled by fat.
Glucose is the bodies preferred fuel (if you want to get technical, it actually burns alcohol most efficiently, but that doesn’t make it any healthier for the body than carbs), the body can convert 100% of carbs, 58% of protein & 10% of dietary fat into glucose. The body can also be fueled by fat (dietary fat & fat cells) but only in the absence of carbs. Your brain actually prefers (* reference info) to be fueled by ketones (part of the fat burning process), only the heart requires glucose, but glucose can be easily converted from excess protein if needed or dietary fat.
A low carbohydrate diet is a high fat diet. The protein should only be a little higher than adequate. You do not want to waste protein as a fuel source, you will leave none for cellular needs. Although it is completely possible to live on a fat/protein only diet for long term (as proven by research done in a hospital setting) it becomes boring fairly quickly. Luckily many vegetables & some fruits, nuts & seeds are low in carbs and greatly expand the diet. Most long term low carbers eat as many, if not more non starchy vegetables than vegetarians.

The brain gets its energy from ketone bodies when insufficient glucose is available. After blood glucose is lowered for 3 days, the brain gets 30% of its energy from ketone bodies. After 40 days, this goes up to 70% (during the initial stages the brain does not burn ketones, since they are an important substrate for lipid synthesis in the brain). In time the brain reduces its glucose requirements from 120g to 40g per day.

Q&A: How much damage does 3 weeks of under eating do to your body?
Question by Heather: How much damage does 3 weeks of under eating do to your body?
I’ve been eating 800-1,000 calories a day for the past 3 weeks as part of my diet plan for weight loss. I recently learned about the “starvation mode” that your body gets put into when you under eat and I’m planning on upping my calories to at least 1,200-1,400. But I’m wondering if I’ve done any damage? Also, will I gain weight with the boost in calorie intake? 17 y/o, 125 pounds

You’re only 17 you really shouldnt being worrying about this unless you’re obese (which you’re not). But if you really want to cut weight my mom has dropped 15 pounds in like two weeks by just simply cutting carbs out of her diet as much as possible. Don’t starve yourself it’s not healthy for your body.

Can you detoxify your body by just eating the right stuff?
Question by Alex: Can you detoxify your body by just eating the right stuff?
I’ve been reading all these articles about liver cleanse and colon cleanse programs. I’ve been eating tons of trans fats, fast food, preservatives and other crap.
Now my question is: do you really have to do that kind of stuff, or will keeping a healthy diet make the body detoxify by itself eventually? By healthy diet i mean mostly raw food (including meat).

Answer by Helios
Yes – that’s the idea. Mostly you can do the whole job with nutrition – but you might want to go visit a Naturo-path doctor type who can walk you through it. Depending on what you’re trying to clean out – like liver – you’d need different stuff. Lots of lemons for instance!
I think this is the stuff which standard medicine doesn’t believe in at all – until you have a serious liver disease from NOT cleaning out the liver. Then maybe doctors have some expensive medicine to give you.

Is losing body fat the same as losing weight?
Question by jade: Is losing body fat the same as losing weight?
Or does weight loss include losing lean meat?
Thing is, i want to get rid of just the fat, but want to keep all the meat, or maybe put on a little more. How can this be done?
Im female, 5’8″ and 130 lbs.
I’ve been reading about losing fat, but it says things like drop ‘x’ pounds by doing this… It sounds like it’s for people who are trying to be thinner, and i don’t want to be thinner, just leaner. Help!

Answer by abercrombie_skinny_minnie
You need to build muscle which will raise your metabolism and get rid of the fat. But dont’ worry! If you are weight training the fat you lose will be replaced by muscle! You will be leaner.
